Sandwich Tern, Honeymoon Island State Park, FL
Image copyright 2003 Arthur Morris/BIRDS AS ART

It was gray this morning. I was photographing seaweed patterns on rocks when a cast-netting fisherman caught a big load of bait. Many fish spilled into the shallow water and onto the rocks. The Laughing Gulls came quickly, and I was amazed to see that they were joined by many Sandwich Terns. In my 27 years of birding, I had never seen a single tern respond to anything other than free-swimming baitfish. I dialed in lots of + compensation and began making images.

Canon 1Ds and 28-135mm lens at 135mm (the "big gun" setting). ISO 400. Evaluative metering + 1 2/3 stops: 1/800 at f/5.6.

All comments welcome.

Best and great picture making to all, Artie

ps: I did get me feet very wet...

I love the placement in the frame. I also love how well the primary and secondary flight feathers are defined.

Great shot!!

What a light, airy feel this has. Those wings are perfect.

You must have been rather close to be able to use a 135MM lens. Love the pattern in the wings. Great shot.

Terns are defintiely doable even with a wide angle lens in some situations. Very nice shot!

Good going for sure. I am pretty sure you could make an excellent shot with a shoe box, a piece of film and a magnifying glass..

Artie,

I'm impressed that you would even lift a 135MM towards the sky. :)

Great photo.

Nice shot... Since the 28-135 is my only lens right now (still waiting for a cheque from the insurance company), it's nice to see it used for birds!

Now we just need Chas and Tom Hill to post some of their Grey Jay (Whiskey Jack) shots from last year. (See my post in the EOH gallery.) Full frame in-flight shots with a 14mm lens aren't that easy to come by!

Hey Artie, This one works for me! I bet this one would look great as a framed print.
