I went camping in western Minnesota this past spring to take images of Chesnut-collared Longspur at Felton Prairie. The campsite I stayed at had lots of large deciduous trees near a running stream. A pair of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers were flying in to this nest hole to feed a VERY loudly calling youngster. I need to get my hands on a 550ex to add some fill which would have made this a better image.

Canon D30, Canon 600mm f/4, ISO 200, RAW, 1/130, f/4, YarcPlus, Photshop, levels, usm, cropped ~4%.

Regards,

Terry

I think this will be a very nice photo when you correct the very strong yellow/green color cast.

Replaced the image with one that I adjusted the saturation to remove the yellow cast.

Terence,

Great image. I think it could handle some more sharpening and I think it could use some more contrast, it just looks a little flat to me. The pose is awesome and the tree has great detail.

The yellow cast is still there and I downloaded it and tried. tried adjusting it with levels and still couldn't get it out completely. Since you have the RAW file, I'd try to readjust the white balance. A nice pose and a wothwhile image to try and fix.

Reprocessed in YarcPlus with the white balance set to Tungsten and the EV Comp to + 1.3.

Thanks for the recommendation Harvey on adjusting the white balance I think that helped a lot.

Always thought that was a funny name for a bird  No one round here believes me when I tell them I didn't just make it up. This is actually the first shot I've seen of one, thanks. I don't find the cast objectionable in the contrast/usm adjusted version. Probably because I don't know what colour the feathers are supposed to be, and the light on the trunk just looks like dappled light through leaves to me.

Terry,

I like how the patterns on the tree are similar to those on the Sapsucker! Nice work!
