One hazy, buggy summer morning a couple of years ago, my friend, Dave, called me on his cell phone to report he had run across a very active group of clapper rails in a local marsh. I was instantly out the door and on my way over there.
This is a pair of youngsters. The black one is still in its all-black chick plumage, while the other is an adolescent, with just a few black feathers remaining under the chin. I like to think the older bird is showing his little cousin (who seems a bit aprehensive) the ways of the world.

Canon 1D, 500 with 2x (as I recall).

AJ -

Cool shot! I don't see too many good pics of these guys out in the open. That younger one is especially good to get. I like the mussel substrate too.

Very nice! 8)

Great catch aj! It's surprising how big that smaller chick is and still all black.

Very nice, AJ. The BG is a bit distracting.

AJ,

A very nice shot, its always a bonus to show two birds representing two generations. Perhaps a bit tighter crop to remove some BG.

This photo is so different, I love it. I like the angle of the ground, the position of the birds. It looks like their out playing in the mud.

This is so neat. I love seeing the 'kids' in various plumage together.

AJ, My first sighting of any clapper youngster, let alone two!! Fabulous image!!! The teen shows an awareness compared to the innocent babe. Thanks for sharing this gem!!

AJ,

I like the tones in this image, and seeing the Rails at two stages of growth is great! Excellent work!

Cute pair. The background is a bit rough but the birds are great.
