Tufted Puffin - Saint Paul, The Pribilofs, Alaska
EOS 10D, 300mm, 1.4x, 1/200, f/13, Fill Flash, ISO 400

This pair spent a few minutes "making out" right in front of me. Unfortunately, at no time did the bird on the left ever reveal his tail completely. I still like the kissy shot here though

This is so cute. They certainly look like happy puffins. :) I think this week's Motif is going to be lots of fun!

EJ:

Perfect composition and action, nice vibrant colors and is very sharp, if I was superpicky I would clone out the single feather at their feet, but this is just a very minor detail. I need to go with you guys to the Pribiloffs.

This is awesome. The colors are incredible. The BG is great and the detail in the blacks is fantastic. The action puts this over the top. I'm feeling like it needs a tad more room on the left.

Such a sweet shot. It looks like the fill opened up the black feathers just right.

Wonderful. :)

E.J.,
This is the best tufted puffin shot I've ever seen! Just about perfect in every way to my eye.

Well done, EJ. Great smooching. Like Alan, I'd go for a bit more room on the left.

Several people want more room on the left. Unfortunately to do that, it would eliminate the ledge dropping off on the right which to me puts the environment in much better context than if it wasn't there. that is the reason I made the decision to compose it as I did. Moving back wasn't an option and I wasn't using zoom lenses.

Given the spot you were shooting from I think this is well done. As you mentioned seeing the tail would have been nice, but I don't think it takes away from the image as presented. Nice color and light!

It really was, two evenings and one full day without a single cloud!
