Red Breasted Mergansers
Barnegat Light, NJ

With Fall and then Winter rapidly approaching these days, I was inspired to bring this one out of my files for the current motif. I had a blast shooting ducks last winter and am looking forward to doing the same this year! One very very very cold day this past January I drove 4.5 hours to arrive at Barnegat Light by sunrise and was rewarded with a very productive day. After finishing shooting, I drove the 4.5 hours back to CT! It was so cold that day that my rear end wasn't defrosted until about 2 hours into the drive home! It was worth it though. I noticed that many RB mergs were flying along the jetty as the last rays of the sun came over the horizon. I set up and waited for the right moment and when this pair came by I shot off a few frame. I hope that you like this one!

Canon 1D, 500IS and 1.4X, Wimberley Sidekick/Kirk BH-1.

Whats not to like? great shot. The pano crop works well and I like that the wings are up on one and down on the other.

Very nice, the exposure is perfect and the composition works well for a pano.

Matthew,

This is fantastic. You got the male and female, the wings up and down, and all in sharp focus. Great shot.

Fantastic, well worth the gluteal hypothermia. Commited nature photographers make this site fun.

Cool!
I don't suppose you remember how you handled the focus on this. I guess one of the focusing points must have been on one of the ducks.

Not an easy bird to capture in flight. This is cool.

Matthew,

Very nice, looks like it was a cold day. I like the wing positions as well.
