I am still editing my slides from the recent Arthur Morris/BAA IPT that I attended a month ago. This White Rumped Sandpiper was one of the many that approached very closely.

I had difficulty with the computer during the scan and discovered right after I finished that the computer had a virus (a worm). Therefore, I won't be posting any new images until we buy a new computer 3-4 months down the road (I am posting this from an old machine that still runs Win95, but which is not compatible with the scanner). These problems could explain why the slide is much nicer than the scan - there seems to be a lot of grain.

Anyway, this was taken with EOS 3, 500F/4LIS, 2XTCII, 25MM of extension, Walt Anderson Ground Pod, evaluative metering at -1/3.

Please comment on any aspect.

Christoph,

Nice image of what I'm pretty sure is a Western Sandpiper. White-rumped's have a pale base to the lower mandible in all plumages........you may want to double-check this one with Artie :P

Christoph,

Nice photio with a nice BG. There is grain in the BG and the bird looks soft to me.

Wow that's close! No white rumps in my files (although with my ID skills there very well may be one that I don't know about) so I would love to have this! Nice one!

Also, you should try selecting the BG and allpying a very light Gaussian blur in PS to kill that grain.

Christoph nice image my only nit is I wish there was a catch light in the eye also I'm 99.9% sure this is a Semi-palmated sandpiper a white rumped would have some color on its lower bill.

Chris -

Nice close up.

I'll agree with Jimmy, except I'm 100% sure. This is a juvenile semi-palmated sandpiper.

As Brian says, white-rumps have a pale base to the bill, which is slightly downcorved. They also have grayish plumage. Semis have a thicker base to the bill and the bill is basically straight, having a blunt tip as seen here. Western bills would be longer, more pointed at the tip and slightly drooped at the tip. Also the scapular feathers on a western would be brighter rufous and the crown would be paler than this bird.

Everything about the presentation has already been said. The slide must be really nice because this isn't that bad, even with the issues. Nicely done.
