I watched this chick preen with the rest of the family. It would swivel it's head 180 degrees at times reminding me of an owl. The angle and color of the light rendered the bird more black than blue. I tried various crops before coming up with this one, the normal cropping rules are difficult to apply in this case.

Softened the BG noise with Neat Image and croped 30%.

500mm f4.5
1/350 sec, f/5.6
Exp comp: -1/2
ISO: 400
Flash: External E-TTL High speed sync
Flash exp comp: +1/2 BB

All has been said so nothing to add to the technicals, which are great in my opinion. Crop looks fine to me.

Cool pose. At first glance I was wondering if I could come up with a better composition but you're right, it's tough on this one. :) Good work.
