Carol,

Gorgeous bird. The detail in the browns and beiges is very nice. The whites in the tail seem a tad hot to me, but a minor nit for a really beautiful image. I love the dark color of the water and background. It really helps to enhance the colors of the pintail nicely!

The Bahama Pintail is one of the most gorgeous ducks found in the western hemisphere and this is a very nice photo although it is a bit overexposed as there is no detail in the whites. Sacrificing a half a stop would still give you nice browns and keep some detail in the whites.

Exactly what EJ said. Did you use flash as main light?

Good to see you here, Carol.

Carol, These are beautiful ducks. If at all possible, I'd prefer a much lower shooting angle.

Thank you all for your critiques, just like old times :D

I used fill flash Sandy, but it was a really hot sunny day - we have been having a heatwave in UK and it was up to 101 degrees F on some days. I should have waited for a cooler, less sunny day - but the heatwave is only just getting a little less now! after nearly 3 weeks, and this little guy is so lovely.

I experienced part of the heat wave in London about a week or so ago so I know of what you say first-hand. My question, however, was not as direct as it should have been. Since the duck is enclosed in darkness, it could have been in deep shade or you could have used flash as main (which this looks like). I suppose, then, that the duck was in the shadows. If not, you inadvertently used flash as main.

No doubt you are right Sandy, I was wilting in the heat by this time and this was my last few shots of the day before going home for a cool shower so I really am not sure what I was doing!

Hope you had a really good holiday. :)

Sweet bird. I'm quite jealous, I've never seen one. I thought our Northern Pintail was gorgeous. Sheesh.

What a beautiful bird and a nicely composed shot of one! A lower angle would have made for a more intimate shot. As for the exposure, this dark water really fools the meter and -1 would have spared the whites here. The fill flash would have taken care of the rest. Still a nice shot of a bird I am lacking in my own files

Nice picture. I had not seen a picture of these ducks before. Would have liked a lower angle.
From what it looks I think it would be difficult to get the details in white by just -1/2 stop, as EJ pointed out. In my experience,in bright conditions I found it difficult to get details in white parts of a dark subject.

Have to agree about that smart plumage! Would only go for less exposure as it affects the whites. I can live with all kinds of angles in photos, and feel the perspective of this one lets me see an interesting feather pattern on the back that would otherwise be missed.

I'm with the general trend on the whites of this one. That is a stellar paint scheme to say the least. I'm envious for sure :)
