nearly full-frame horizontally. USM, saturation, levels in PS.

So here's the full bird from my motif shot earlier. Sure, it's a cute bird and I really like the BG - but it's funny how I like this shot less and less each time because of the bugly perch.

So, does the perch ruin this for you? Is it worth keeping?

cheers,

like the pano orientation which goes along with the birds lines and all the technicals are very good. I'd just like possibly a bit more room in front of the bird.

Despite the perch, Matt, this is a lovely image. The tail is sensational.

Matt:

I'm with you. The bird is great, with its lovely colors and long graceful, sweeping lines.
But the perch is ugly, and it crowds the sweep of the primaries.
Is it worth keeping? That's up to you. I often keep shots I'm not quite happy with until I get something better. Then I dump the old one.

Also, I thought the image looked a bit flat on my monitor so I opened it in PS and it looked just fine there. Did you post it in srgb or adobe rgb?

I think the long tail and wings are depicted really well! The head turn and background are excellent too.

aj,
I'm pretty sure I converted it to sRGB, but I have to double check my calibration - there seems to be about a half-stop of brightness difference in my recent web-postings.

Hey matt,

As the photo was opening up I was thinking, I am really going to hate you. :) Untill the perch came up. This is the nicest image of a swallow you can get. The pose and exposure are outstanding. Still a great shot, but if this was on a natural perch it would be just unbelieveable.

Thanks for posting it. Alan

Regardless of the perch this is a gorgeous image Matt. That beautiful little bird would look good sat on a garbage can.

The quality of the image sets it apart in its own right so don't you even think of throwing it away - which you aren't anyway!!!

Matt,

A nice pose perhaps a bit higher angle would have removed some of the perch. Nice green BG.

Matt,

There's so much to like in this image, that I don't mind the perch. The crop, detail, pose and background are excellent! Well done!

That really shows off the dimensions of the bird well and the exposure is good, something hard to do at times with this species, I have found.

I don't mind the perch at all. It tough framing long tailed birds but I think you did a good job here.
