This image of a captive Bald Eagle is probably way too tight for most people's taste (maybe Tony will like it :D ) but it was the closest I had ever been to one and I wanted to capture every detail. Looking into his eyes I was glad that I was not anything he perceived as food.

The photo was taken during a workshop at a rehabilitation center in central California.

This is a very well crated image, Neil. I love the feather flow and the faint touches of brown in the white feathers. Beautifly framed. I could go on and on... :)

Gorgeous, Neil. Hardly ever too tight for me.

It doesn't look too close for me. Well maybe back off enough to get the feather on the right from not being cut off and giving a bit more room up front. However, if it was mine, it would be on the wall. :D

I'm going to need to go for a few head shots next year.

Beautiful portrait, I love it. I know the 100-400 is not the sharpest in the field but for portraits, I can't see any better. Congrats.

For the level of detail, it's not too tight for me. Love the lines of the feathers and the curve of the beak, too. That eye really adds power and life to this shot - some captive birds look cowed, but not this one.

You sure captured a stern expression and the detail is incredible. I like it as is.

Very nice, Neil. I agree it is tight, but it works extremely well for this subject.

Neil,

I really like the yellow color with the subdued shades in this image! Very striking portrait!

Very nice lines and detail. It's hard to critique a perfect image---one can only express their preference in some ways. I would like to see more of the neck feathers, or a vertical, and a little lighter tone in the midtones where there seems to be a bit of greenish cast.
