Hello Avian NatureScapers..

This has been a fun motif this week. I used to read on photography forums the old statement: "while head shots may not be for everyone...." and then the poster would give a head shot. Make it the motif and everyone has a dozen of them... Guess most people get a kick out of the close ups..

I made this image off of the boat on a lake not too far from Minneapolis, June 2003. These guys were doing the courtship dance on the water, swaping green gunky stuff from the lake bottom (true love) and getting some nests together.. Beautiful birds..

Thanks for looking and any comments or suggestions..

Now that is cool. Looks pretty good to me. I think I'd like a tiny bit more room on the left to separate the back of the neck from the edge of the frame, but still a stunning shot.

I think its sweet that true love for a Grebe entails swapping green funky stuff from the lake bottom! :) Perhaps we humans could learn a thing or two

Truly a gorgeous image Dennis and I am sure if ever all your photos are together in a public exhibition people just won't want to leave.

Stunning!

Ditto EJ's comments. This is awesome. Headshots weren't necessarily for me....why.....never could get close enough to anything but tame mallards!!!!

Very well taken in all respects. Maybe a touch more headroom on top would be nice but that's only my take.

Dennis,

A very nice closeup, I like the way it the bird fits the entire frame. The BG colors and texture compliment the bird.

Dennis,

Awesome image. The exposure is on the money, the background color is wonderful, and what an eye.

This is as good as it gets. Of course the sinuous flow of the composition, with the hint of an upcurve implied at the bill really makes it. But the red eye ain't bad either. And the detail in both lights and darks iss great, as is the background. And the precise, surgical nature of the bill.

I do agree with Neil that you need just a tiny bit more space behind the head. If it's not there in the original I would clone it in.

Not much more to say about picture quality. I'm in school that favors tight crop for this incredible shot, even more than cloning more space into left/top.
