Crowned Crane
EOS3, 300F4L IS, Velvia, handheld, slight crop bottom and left for composition

Captive

These guys look amazing in the right light.
I wish I had a little more DOF but he took a dislike to having the camera pointed at him and turned away before I could get another shot off.

Comments welcome and thanks for looking.

Very nice light and I like how the back-light lights up the crown. I'm a traditionalist and would like to see the bird's head turned.

Hey Dave,

The crown is great with this light. Seeing more of the face would balance this more.

Dave,

The way the light is hitting the crown is very nice. I agree with you about the depth of field. The head being turned a little more towards the camera would inprove the image. The color of the background complements the crown very well.

I like the lit up crown a lot and the composition. The crown is quite strong and I am undecided about the bird being turned away - typically I like birds more parallel with the film plane but I do think there are exceptions. The background is pretty neat, too.

Dave,

I love the colors and the way the light illuminates the crown. I'm with you on wanting more DOF but they don't always let us work 'till we're done. :)

Overall a very nice image.

Thanks all for your comments, very kind.
Carol and I went to a "Wildlife farm" a couple of weeks ago. We were unsure what we would find, but they had four of five of these guys and the prairie dogs Carol posted recently and one or two others you may seen soon :)

LOL - Interesting to see that Steve Sage thought the same as me about the likeness to a fibre-optic lamp!

It was a nightmare trying to get these birds to stand for a photo - they were constantly on the move or at least moving their heads, but beautiful to watch with the sunlight shining through their 'crowns'.

:)
