published an Article about an eagle hunter in the Kazak area of Mongolia.. Two years later another group visited the eagle hunter in Northwest Mongolia. This is his eagle, the same one in the NG article. We flew from Ulan Bator to Olgi in a Russian Antanoff 34 twin engine turboprop, then took Russian Jeeps for about a day. That night, someone siphened one of the two tanks of fuel from a van, while people were sleeping in the van. The next morning, we waded across the Hovd River to the island where the eagle was kept. On the drive back, we found out the gas had been stolen and were able to stop someone to get some extra gas.
I took this image with a Nikon N90, extension tube , exposure not recorded, 75-300mm,
I also desaturated the image and will post the same image below this one. I am not sure which I prefer, but there have been several B&W shots posted on NSN and I wanted to get an opinion of the comparison. The border is an experiment also with colors from the interior of the photo, then lightened.
Comments welcome.

The same shot in B&W, desaturated, some contrast added.

I definitely like the color version. Just captures it better, in my opinion.

I'm another vote for the color. He doesn't look like a happy camper. Love the look and the tongue out and the way the feathers at the back look like hair running down his head. Might take a bit more USM.

I like the color version (although the B&W still works) and think you picked pretty good color for your frame. I think the composition could be stronger with a little cropped off the top of the frame. Nice catch with the bill open and the tongue out!

I like the color image best, too. If all you saw was the b&w it would be a real grabber, but the color really makes the shot special.

It's a real grabber of an image either way.

I agree with Dennis O. in that I like the top one for the color and crop. The B&W is a little too tight for my taste. :)

The intensity and the visible tongue are what makes this stand out, IMO.

Steve:

Quite a trek, and quite a bird.

I like the color version by a wide margin. The B&W version could work, but I think you added a bit too much contrast here. Your whites in the bill got blocked up, and I'd like more detail in the darks as well. If it had a full, rich range of tones it could be quite dramatic I have never tried digital monochrome, but I used to love making B&W prints from film.

When all is said and done, however, I think birds were made to be photographed in color.

I like the colour version...

As a self professed raptor nut...this is a great shot! Maybe a bit hot along the nostrils in the B/W version....

The eagle hunter wears a 7 fox leg hat. I don't know about wolves, but he hunts foxes in winter when they are easily visible.

Wonderful shot, Steve. Let's make it unanimous for the color version and the crop thereof. I am not fond of the outer frame that matches the color of the BG. The image is stunning with black frame only.

I like the color version but I've always had a rough time with B&W images. Love the red tongue. :D

I too vote for for the color but as much for the crop as the color. Great screaming eagle head shot. Nice to shoot such a famous bird.

Steve,

While both versions are extremely nice, I too prefer the color version! Excellent images!
