Striated Caracara
Sea Lion Island, Falkland Islands

Striated Caracaras or Johnny Rooks are one of the rarest birds of prey in the world. In the Falkland Islands they are fairly common and some are very approachable like this immature bird. I have never been able to appraoch wild BOP as close as I did some of these birds-and with a 100-400 lens to boot. It was important to keep an eye on these birds though as they have been known to 'attack' people by flying into them with their feet.

Canon EOS3 with 100-400IS on tripod, Provia 100F.

Fantastic - the colors of the foliage really accentuate the bird.

Caracaras of the Falklands!!! Killer bird and great capture to boot!!
There was an special on the National Geographic Channel about this birds, aggressive is an understatement, they can hit you hard on the head!!!, The also hunt Cormorants on the wing like a hawk does birds, without talons this is indeed an incredible feat!!!
Wonderful in every way!!! Congrats!!! 8)

You just keep giving me reasons to head to the Falklands! (Like I needed any more!) Love the way the colors of the surroundings complement the bird. Bird's got to have a real aggressive streak to hunt cormorants without the benefit of talons.

Very beautiful shot. I call myself a raptor enthusiast and I thought I knew them all. This one is new to me and you captured it beautifully.

Great colors and composition. The foreground and background are seemlessly connected. The bird sits nicely in between.

This is very nice!!

Can someone explain to me the lack of talons that has been mentioned? I would have imagined a bird like this would be well endowed with such.
Thanks.
