I found this guy a few days ago on the beach at Padre Island in Corpus Christi, TX. He was the most cooperative oystercatcher I have ever encountered. Several times he got closer than the minimum focus distance.

To me it looks like he's really struggling with some critter just under the surface of the sand.

EOS 1D, 600 and 2X TC, evaluative metering -2/3 (ISO 400, 1/1,000, f11).

Thanks for looking. All comments welcome.

Beautiful, Bruce. The FG/BG are surreal. Sharp as can be.

Looks like a bit of a breeze caught a few feathers and to me that helps make this a great shot.

Waoooh Bruce: This is superterrific, so sharp and well exposed, the background is so pristine and well complimentary, even the pupil is fine. You have to take me to this place on Sunday after we are done with the Ruby throats.

Great image Bruce and a lovely background to go with it.

It just shows what a 2XTC and a 600 (IS?) can accomplish with good technique.

Cheers,
Rob.

The smooth black background makes this very unique. It also really makes the dark bird and it's bright highlights jump right out of the frame. I love the effect.
