Wood Duck Drake Aix sponsa

I know that this photo has some problems, one being the high shooting angle. The main problem was the bank is so high that it is tuff to get much lower but I wonder if I would have gotten the colors as well had I been lower. The whites are somewhat toast and I should have had my flash with me to fill in a bit. But I love the colors and decided to share even with the problems.

Canon 10D
100-400
Tv @1/400, f7.1, Eval @-1/3, ISO 400
Handheld
Cropped about 20%

Any comments appreciated!! Thanks for looking!

I think you have your own critique. The whites are a bit over and fill flash might have opened up the shadows in the neck. But the colors are spectacular and the swirls in the water are a nice complement to the duck.

Sheri,

The BG makes this shot, whites are hot as you mention, perhaps a linear conversion could help assuming a raw file was saved.

I agree the swirly colors in the BG make the shot. Certainly makes up for the hot spots on the duck.. Lovely portrait and I would be happy to have it in my files.

Sheri, the white areas don't bother me at all. I find myself looking at all the color, and am totally intrigued by that water. Nice!!

Sheri,

When the whites are this small of a percentage of the whole image, I say, let them go. The more you crop in, the less the high angle is noticeable. I think you did great here. Beautiful photo.

Very nice Shari! Duck in green water with white is almost always a -2/3 to -1 exposure with the Canon DSLR's. You then extract shadow detail with a curves adjustment. I'll show you what I mean in CA :) We will have plentuy of opportunity to work on Dynamic Range compression on the Buffelheads!

But all is not lost with this photo. Go back to the RAW file and do a Linear RAW conversion and then combine it with the Normal conversion and you will gain back quite a bit of white detail.

Here is a link to an article on how to do that:

Hi Sheri, You have done your own critique so I won't even go there! What I will say is - this is a stunning shot and captures all the gorgeous colours and character of this little guy and that BG really puts this one in the 'special' category.

Stunning!

In spite of your critique I still this this is a very nice image! All the variations of color presented here are just amazing and the water is wonderful. Any shots I have of a woody with my 400mm lens show a colorful spec in the distance.

Sheri,
We should all have problems like this. These birds are so beautiful that it is very easy (for me, at least) to look past some minor nits.
