Wood Stork (Mycteria americana)
Shark Valley, Everglades NP, Ochopee, FL, on 1 Dec 2002

With the generally poor backgrounds at Shark Valley, I was pleased to spot this juvenile Stork so well outlined against the sky. The flowers were a bonus. Exposure was a no-brainer at sunny-f16 conditions. Though I used flash, it probably had little or no effect

I hope you like it. Critiques, comments, and reposts are welcome.

As you mentioned...the flowers certainly were a bonus. Everything else is done capably as usual.

Oh, this is great! The sky and flowers are awesome, great exposure and leg lift on the stork. Shark Valley is a challenging place to shoot, which makes this shot all that much more incredible. :)

Although I'm not familiar with Shark Valley, I do know if anyone can make the most of a challenging location it's you Sandy. This is wonderful. I love the way the flowers cradle the stork. The leg lift gives it personality.

Very nice!!

I think I like the juvies better than the adults with Wood Storks. Nice shot.

I really like the inclusion of the flowers in this image. I have never seen this species in person and really appreciate the views of the various phases. The little head tilt lends this a nice personality as well. Very nice as always Sandy. :)

Your stork shots are going to ruin their reputation as ugly birds! Excellent as usual.

Sandy:

What a great shot! He looks like an awkward adolescent trying to pick out some flowers for his girlfriend. Is he actually grasping his left leg with his right foot? Interesting behaviour, but if you are going to stand on one foot, this is probably easier than holding the leg up.

This would be a very nice image without the flowers--The flowers make it great!

Trust you to send flowers to get this bird to pose for you! It seems to have done the trick anyway.

Great shot Sandy and this not so pretty bird has ended up the belle of the ball.

Sandy,

Very nice shot. Exposure and composition are on the money. I like the inclusion of the flowers at the bottom of the frame.

Wonderful as usual. But I'm trying to figure out where he was that you would be down low and shooting up and still have flowers presumably above you?
