Waiting for it to stop raining so he could go swimming!

Not exactly what the moderators probably have in mind for "head shots" but this is a favorite and has the advantage of already being scanned. From St Paul, Pribs Aug 2001, up on Zapadne. I still find it funny that a bird who makes it living catching fish underwater would be driven inside by a drizzly rain. A biologist friend suggests that the fresh water bothers them whereas salt water is home.

It was a very misty rain; the overall foggy appearance is actually a lost more contrasty than the scene.

Canon 1v, 500 f/4.5 with stacked converters. I think the exposure time was about 1/30 to 1/60 sec with Provia 100 rated 320, pushed 2 stops. Flash and Beamer, but can't remember the specifics, most likely at about -2/3 to -1. The original slide is slightly soft and the scan is a bit more soft, but it works with the image I think? Comments appreciated.

Lillian,
Love the composition and the soft moss(?) on the walls. Also the drop on the beak. Only wish the puffin itself was a little sharper but I don't know how it could be with the conditions as they were and the size lens/converters used. I think it is amazing you have what you have here.

Lillian,

I think this is a really cute shot, and it does work for me! There are a few issues probably originating from the scan, some hot spots and what may be a touch of a color cast. But I think these are things that may not be on the slide and/or are fixable on digital. I love how the bird has retreated and has the water drop on its nose, really cute! The way you've composed it works well too.

I like the shot, especially the drop of water on the bill. The image does have a bit of a green cast and the bird is a little soft. Nothing that isn't easily corrected though.

This is great! Bothered by the rain. Everything else has already been said. And I think it's closer to the Motif than some I've seen.

Sweet shot Lillian! very unusual and funny. Well seen and taken. A little soft but in this image it goes with the rainy feel.

Lillian,

Different, has a lot of mood and I like it. It does look grainy to me.

I'm sure that many of the things previously mentioned are due to the scan. However, I especially like this puffin shot. It sets a wonderful mood...complete with droplet of water.
