This was one of the infamous "studio shots". :P When I was sick last winter with bronchitis I spent a lot of time looking at the birds out my studio window. :( There is a bird feeder about three feet away from the window. My hubby graciously cleaned the window, we took out the screen and I proceeded to shoot anything that moved on the feeder with my new 300/2.8 lens with 37mm of extension tubes! It was great, while all the other LILer's were out chasing non-existing Snowy Owls at Jones Beach, :P I was sitting in a cushy chair with my feet on the radiator taking pictures through the window!!

Canon D30, 300/2.8 with 37mm of extension tube, flash, I don't have this exif data anymore. Some work in PS.
Comments and critiques always welcome!

A great expression on the birds face and nice technicals and showing of the elements. I think you might want to try this as a vertical.

Sweet shot, Gail. Finely detailed with good eye contact. A tiny bit more in profile and the beak would have separated from the body.

What a cutie! I really miss these birds, here in CA. I love this portrait and the snowflakes tell their own story.

Glad you are feeling better nowadays! (I hope?)

Gail:

Really nice. I like the colors and detail, the dark collar and white bib, and especially the blue shingled look on top of the head and crest.

I agree with Sandy on the lack of separation between bill and face, but the shot captures the typical quizzical blue jay expression so well, I don't really mind the bill all that much.

Gail,

This is nice. There is alot of great detail. I think the falling snow and the snow on the jay add alot to the image.

Love the quizzical look and the great detail and the drops of water on the bird. 37mm of extension on a 300! You really were close!

Favorite part of the shot? That one drop bouncing at an angle off his head!

This is excellent Gail - I especially like the curious head tilt. This one put a smile on my face.

Gail,

Shooting through your window glass did not hurt this image. It's a fantastic photo.

Wonderful image, Gail. Blue Jays really do relate to people. He seems to be saying 'get well soon' so hubby won't have to clean any more windows!!

Gail,

Wonderful color and detail! The position of the head, with the snow/ drops of water, adds to the great composition!

Gail, congratulations, this is really wonderful. The slight head tip and the snow really bring it all together into a very nice package. Well done.

Ha! What a great shot, Gail! I agree a little bit more profile might have been slightly better but I love the expression and the cold feeling I get from this image.

The character of this bird is captured perfectly in this shot - and I love the snowfall too! Way to make the most of the situation. :)
