This Eastern Kingbird was taken earlier this summer. I was driving slowly through Sherburne NWR and this guy just started singing out of the blue. I didn't even notice him until I was basically on top of him. Opened up the window, aimed, and shot. Literally was so close I almost could have touched him.

Canon Eos10D + 400mm f/5.6 @f/9.0, 1/200th sec, ISO100, EV -2/3. No flash was used, the catchlight is natural.

Chris,

Nice shot. The exposure looks good and the open mouth is a big bonus.

Nice pose and the open bill is great - there is a bit of muddying in the dark plumage presumably due to trying to gain some detail back through sharpening.

Pretty cool! I agree with E.J.'s muddying comment in the blacks.

The bird looks great against that wonderful background, but the bird itself seems a little soft. Not sure why, though. Great catch of the open bill.

I believe I made a post-processing mistake in that the original was over 120k just slightly so I had to re-open and re-save and in that process of re-saving a jpeg file at a slightly higher compression rate I lost detail/sharpness as I forgot to re-sharpen. The original file is not soft like this one is. Matter of fact it is so sharp that I used very little sharpening at all on it.
