This is the same bird that Jim Probst posted last week. Jim was kind enough to take me to the spot where he had seen and photographed this bird and the little devil was still there, defending his territory.
This bird may be an exotic, but it is the most colorful bird in this part of southern california and a pleasure to watch and photograph.

Gorgeous bird, I've never seen one before, thanks for sharing! The BG would not have been my first choice but it works here.

Bright bird. You should have warned me I'd need my sun glasses. Tough exposure and I'm not sure you got it just right. :?

Halloween did come early! Wild colors and marvelous perch. Could take the sky a bit darker, but that's the cost, I suspect, of retaining detail through the blacks.

What a colorful bird. There seems to be a small bit of detail loss in the blacks (at least on my monitor) but it's very minor and not detract from the shot at all. Great perch, well done.

Beautiful photo of a lovely bird.

If you are interested in more information read on:

Here in Australia we call these birds "Red Bishops" - Euplectes orix

There are an import and their true distribution are from Angola, Zaire, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and Mozambique.

In Australia there are usually a caged bird but in one of our Birding books it is reported that a wild population has become established in the state South Australia.

"Red Bishops are primarily grassland birds but are rarely found far from water... Nesting is cheifly found in reed beds."

For more information see http://web.uct.ac.za/depts/stats/adu/pdf/824.pdf

Hope this helps!

Cheers from Down Under!
Rob
