Maned Duck Chenonetta jubata
EOS300D, 300 F4L IS, 1.4xTCII, iso 400, F6.3, 1/640, 550EX @ -2/3, handheld

It looks a little like a pygmy goose or similar to me, but I'm probably way off.

EDIT:: see, I knew I was wrong   Thanks for the ID EJ :)

This is an absolutely fantastic shot of a female Maned Duck. A native of Australia.

I’ll have to defer to E.J.’s ID skills. ;)

This is an absolutely wonderful shot of a duck I’ve never heard of before.
Very, very nice!!

EJ is correct in his ID. I don't want to make an issue about this, but the bird is clearly pinioned and should, therefore, be properly captioned as captive. Nice shot with moody water, though.

While this may be a good practice, it is not a requirement on NatureScapes.

I know Dave is more than able to answer this himself, but in his absence this evening, I would just like to point out that when we know we are posting a wing clipped captive duck we will say it was photographed at a wildlife park or whatever. On the particular lake this was shot, there are a mix of captive and free flying birds and until E.J. kindly identified this one we did not know which category this belonged to. I certainly would not know anyway unless it was obviously clipped as some are.

I am sure it will be 'properly captioned' to your satisfaction Phil as soon as Dave returns.

This is a stunning shot Dave. I love the neutral tones which run throughout the image and the way the duck's plumage matches the silky water.

Dave,

What a neat looking lady. The brown water compliments her quite well.
