The head of this relatively small Walking Catfish was flattened by the GBH before an attempt to swallow was made. Walking Catfish, like most catfish, have 3 sharp needle like spines, one on their dorsel fin and one on each of their pectoral fins. (I have seen GBH swallow even larger WC without any effort being made to flatten these spines. It always amazes me how they do it.) At any rate, I lucked out in catching this WC in mid-air just as the GBH did his "flip" down the hatch. Incidentally, the WC is one of the 28 exotic fish that are in the Everglades waters. Imported by tropical fish dealers, mostly from South America, as small albino fish, their offspring revert to their normal black/brown/gray colors. It is believed that either the dealers or owners threw unwanted WC into local waters and the rest is history.

Wow......you were there at the perfect moment! And the catfish was there at the wrong time, but that's nature. Great action shot! Congratulations!

Absolutely perfect timing!! The WC in mid-air puts this one over the top. :)

Good capture for the GBH, great mid-air capture for you, and for the catfish,I guess the message that it really didn't belong there. :)

George, I've loved this one since I first saw it displayed (at Loxahatchee, I believe).

The walking catfish is an invasive species, many of which displace native species in habitats where the invasives have been released. This GBH seems to have found one good solution to the problem! Terrific shot.
