Royal tern
Fort Desoto Park, FL

I don't know this for sure, but it seems pretty clear to me how Royal terns got their name. With a "crown" like that he has to be the King.

Comparisons to Don King go without saying...

Feel like I should have either exposed for the blacks or the whites, instead I tried to get both and lost detail in both. If anyone has some thoughts I'd be happy to hear them!

With this much white in the image, I would expose for the whites.

Chris:

If You shot Raw, this wonderful picture deserves a PS merge between two images one exposed for the blacks and another one for the whites, just layer them and erase the off lattitude top to expose the correct one on the bottom. If you want, email me the raw version and I will play.

Same as Jdown. A very striking close-up.

Chris,

Love the "crown". I like Juan's idea if you have the RAW file. Otherwise, how about exposing for the whites and using fill flash to open the black areas?

Hi Chris, You gotta expose for the whites, then open up the black a bit in CS with Shadow/Highlight... -1/3 stop from the evaluative meter reading gives pretty close to a perfect histogram in similar situations (as long as the black crown in not centered in the frame and thus overly affecting the meter). Also, after working the image in Sh/H you could lasso and feather the dark parts of the head and lighten that in Levels.
Good to see you down there in the salt slurry...
Best, Artie

I like!

I think you did pretty well with the exposure (but what do I know?) You have detail in the whites excpet a very gently defined area on either side-- i think you made a good compromise and much better than I could do.

Juan,

I'm still pretty limited in my PS skills but I took another shot at it. All I did was work with Curves and Levels more. Tried your suggestion with little results. I'll try again when there's more time. If I can't figure it out I'll take you up on your generous offer Juan.

Hi Art,

Good to see you crawling in the muck too. I don't have CS yet so no shadow/highlights for me, thought I was getting pretty high-tech upgrading from 5.0 to 7.0 last year :) .

I like the repost better! CS is well worth the upgrade!
