Photographed a couple of weeks ago on Lake Umbagog in NE, NH. Handheld from a canoe this loon kept surfacing way to close to the canoe.

Rick...I know how hard to get these guys are from a canoe. I did that for two years until I had no more hair(rip, rip, rip). The water is nice. looks like slight movement on the loon but it may be my monitor. Handheld from a canoe is tough. Good Job.

Rick, Welcome to NSN. This is a nice shot! I hope to someday do loons from a boat. I will have to sign up for one of Karen's workshops ;). Love the red eye and gaze toward the camera. Perhaps a tad more USM would help, but still very well done!

The species is awesome and this catch conveys the elusiveness of the bird. It's a wonderful photo. If you converted to linear before re-sizing or cropped it after resizing, that might account for the hashed lines on the edge of the beak.

Excellent shot, Richard, especially with the front of the head in shadows and the rest in sunlight. The whites are a bit over, but in my mind that was a good compromise in the absence of fill. Great to see you on this site.

Thanks all for the comments. Yes shooting from a wind blown canoe is not as easy as I thought it would be. My back seat paddler was attempting to keep me lined up with the loon but difficult for him to do.

Glad to see and hear from old friends on NSN.

What a cool headshot - love the way the eye comes through here. Waiting another second to be fully in green water would have really put it over the top.

Really nice capture at a pristine part of NH. Squam Lake is another with a good loon population. The clarity lighting and comp are all well done.
