Taken at the Miami Zoo some months back when I visited Alex. This bird was up in a bamboo type tree and I concentrated on capturing his beautiful head colors. I believe he's a native of SE Asia.

10D, 600IS, 1.4x, fill at -1 1/3, EV -2/3, cropped from the left, RAW.levels.

Comments and reposts welcome.

Nice one, Jim. I've not seen this species at the aviary.

Cool shot Jim. I like it even with the brighter BG. Zoo's can be tough to shoot in. Nice Job :D

Love the bird and would wish for a different BG.

Personally, I think this is great. Very good contrast between the bird and the background. :)

Jim,

I think that if you made this a head shot by cropping down to just above the head and crop up past the dark area of the bird, with a little of the left, it would make it stronger.

Great detail.

Shooting birds in captivity can often be very challenging too ...
You had done well with this one, Jim!

Alan,

I agree with your crop. The top space certainly detracts from the bird.

I never saw this bird when I was there, either. You did a great job with this one.....the Aviary is a hard place to shoot....even if there are a lot of interesting birds. Nice one!!!

Colors and detail are great. Concur on the cropping suggestions. Looks like a good job on the exposure under difficult conditions.

Very well done, Jim. I especially adore the beak!! Birds are being added into the Aviary and successful breeding has already occurred.

Great view of an unusual bird, the eye really gets my attention. I like Alan's crop suggestion and think it helps to strengthen the image.

The colors in the bill are pretty cool, too, I've never seen any bird like it.
