Least Bittern (Ixobrychus exilis)
Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Delray Beach, FL, on 10 Jun 2003

Despite the fact that this is far from my best image of Bittern Baby, it holds a place in my heart. Day after day Bittern Baby learns life tasks, and this is serious work. But after all, Bittern Baby is just that – a baby – and no one should begrudge him the time he takes to act like a baby. This is one of those moments.

DOF on this image is poor. I wasn’t thinking. F8, or better yet F11, would have been ideal. Just as Bittern Baby can act childish, I can act senile – and often do.

Thanks for looking. Comments, critiques, and reposts are welcome.

Sandy, I would have thought even this youngster would have better tongue control. As you stated more DOF would have helped.

Well DOF has been covered. Did you stick your tongue back at him?

Sandy, The personality you've captured here outshines any technical shortcomings. I think this is just adorable.

Sandy,

Very nice portrait. You already gave yourself a pretty good critique. The tongue and that beautiful eye more than make up for any shortcomings.

DOF? Well, Sandy we will forgive you this time!
What really makes up for the shortcoming are the sharp eye and its exposed tongue ...

Sandy,
His tongue almost looks like a worm. I like the unusual, and this one sure fits that description.

Sandy, Those of us on Medicare are permitted to act senile. But, as others have said, I love the eye and unusual tongue!! Don't forget to keep 'em coming!

As you have demonstrated....images don't have to be perfect to be our favorites. This one is grand....love the youngster and I can see why you like it so much.

Can a bird give you a "raspberry?" ;) If so, I think you were given one here. Sharp where it counts!

It may not be your usual technical perfection Sandy but BB has been missed! Good to see another chapter in the story and such a funny one too.

Very nice catch Sandy.. What 500 lens are you using? With the 2x you had to be at f8 already?

You are correct, Attila. I just checked my EXIF data and found that I used a 1.4x on my 500/f4 lens.
