I doubt I would have posted this except for the motif. WHile I like the body and wing positions and sharpness, the bright rock is a problem. I don't think I have this dodging/burning thing down quite right, no matter how many times I go over it nothing looks any different! Suggestions welcomed.

This bird made a couple of aborted attempts at landing, so I prefocused on the spot where he'd been perched before taking off and waited for my chance. I got this shot and one still in the air but with a wing clipped.

Canon 10D, ISO 200, 100-400IS hand held. Cayman Brac bluffs.

Lillian, Did you shoot this in RAW ir JPG mode? If you have it in RAW try the technique in Greg and Heather's article this month http://www.naturescapes.net/092003/gd0903.htm

Otherwise this is a very dynamic, action, image. I like it. I hope to shoot boobies someday. BTW you are a little early on the landing motif.

I think its a pretty cool photo but you are right about the brighter areas. i think this one is totally salvageable though by combining a linear conversion with a normal conversion. Here is a link in the NSN archives that will get you started:

Neat shot. Great work. THe problem with the hot whites was not yours alone. I was shooting at minus to get them and still had some problems. The pose is wonderful. composition great and whites hot, but not so bad that it ruins the purpose of the image. We will try again next time.

Great pose and balance. The hot areas should be easily fixable with a mild burn. It just takes a bit of practice and isn't all that difficult.

Hey, flopping birds are next week.
I don't think the rock compete too much with the bird. The bird is very bright. Interesting wing position and motion blur.
Really, I'm glad you posted it so that I could see it.

I also think this is a cool shot (a week early on the specific motif but that's okay). :D I find catching birds with their wings up to be quite challenging because I usually chop off parts. I would be very interested to see the results of the combined conversion - if you decide to give it a go please feel free to include your repost in the thread.

I, too, like the blurred wingtips for implied motion.
