This is from northern lower Michigan where I have photographed Loons and their chicks for the last 3 springs. The chick is out of the frame here. I really don't remember if the chick was fed this one or the parent ate it. This fish was bigger than most that I saw the chick get fed.

Canon 10d, 400mm 2.8IS, 1.4X, ISO200, 1/500sec at f9, Tripod and Wimberley head on a pontoon boat. I haven't played with this to see if the eye can be brought out more. Normal conversion from Breezebrowser.

This is a great image! Loons are one of my favorites. The fish appears to be a small bass.

I love the loons...and this is a great shot. I don't even have a loon shot and here you've got one....with a fish. I'm terribly jealous. Great job!

Wow....I just love Loons. Hopefully some day I'll be able to add some of these fellas to my library.

GREAT shot...Thanks for sharing.

A loon, a loon with a fish, a loon with a fish and the ring around its neck showing green.

Yeah...jealous pretty much sums it up for me too.

Hi Steve,

Jealous does not begin to sum it up for me Steve. I just returned from a 5 day wilderness canoe trip through northern Minnesota. I was already portaging 100 lbs (60 lb. pack and 40 lb canoe) over hill and dale and opted to leave the 500mm at home. I took a 400/5.6 but it just wasn't enough.

Looks like a large mouth bass, we caught only smallies in MN. A bit less of a head turn would show off the eye even more.

Well Done!

Lovely shot, Steve. I, too, would like more of a profile.

The fish almost seems too much for the bird but I guess it wasn't big enough. Nice catch.

I am in agreement, loons are among my favorites! I hear these birds have very impressive diving abilities with which to chase fish, too.

I like the angle and the green which is apparent around the neck. The fish in the mouth is a great bonus!
