While in Homer while everyone else was shooting the eagles Stan and I were pointing our cameras the other way at the flock of 150 finches that Jean feeds daily in her yard. It was hard to get a background there that wasn't man-made and there was only a very small window where you could get this out of focus mossy background. Nothing fance.... just a bird on a stick, These guys were simply beautiful!

600, 10D, ISO 200, fill flash and the only stick in the area.

Very nice portrait - seems an improbable colour scheme for a bird but you've captured it perfectly.

Sweet shot, Jim!! The mottled background is a nice match to the patterns on the bird.

Nice shot Jim. Interestingly enough, this is the more common race up in Alaska, but in New Mexico, only a few of these "Hepburns" Gray-crowned show up at any given time. Very nicely done. Funny thing is, if I went to homer, i'd probably spend as much or more time on Rosy Finches as I would on Eagles. I love their colors. Wish I would have had a chance this winter, but they just weren't reliable or plentiful at Sandia Crest this year.

Hi Jim---this is quite an impeccable example of the species. The colors and details are so interesting! I do like the slight turn of the head towards us while its upstage foot is turned away. 8)

Jim,

I don't think I've ever seen the color on this species drawn out so well.

My only suggestion would be to crop a bit off the left side (or leave a bit more on the right).
