Reposted with a bit more USM. I don't like to overdue the sharpening.
Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions.

This male bufflehead came up from a dive, floated for a few seconds
and all of a sudden raised himself to a huge wing stretch.

EOS-1DS, 600 mm f/4
1/640 sec. f/13 ISO 400
Aperture Priority, RAW
Cropped to about 60% of the original frame

Hope you do like it.
Dieter

This is sweet all around. The detail in the wings is crisp, and bringing out all of the color in the head as well as keeping the whites properly exposed was very well done. Great shot :)

Great timing and choice of shooting parameters to freeze this cute little duck so sharply in mid-stretch!

When you consider how fast and far ducks fly, I'd say "mighty" is a choice of terms as excellent as this photo!

Fine shot, Dieter. Great action. The head appears a bit softer than the near wing.

Fantastic behavior and capture of the colorful sheen around the bird's head! Seems a touch soft in areas, a bit more USM could help.

Great timing on this one for sure!

Awesome shot. Some selective sharpening around the head will bring it to the next level. :)

Good pose and detail and you've done a nice job of keeping the whites under control.

Perfect pose Dieter, the iridescence in the head is excellent. A lower shooting angle would clean up the BG.

Nicely done, Dieter. This is one of your best images of late in my opinion. Great colour, pose & timing! the background doesn't bother me.
