I just got back tonight from my first Pelagic birding trip, out of San Diego. The one bird I really wanted to see was an Albatross- any species, all would be new. We saw exactly one- this bird. This is also the only bird I got any decent images of. It was too rough a lot of the time to be stable to shoot or even want to have the camera in my hands, and subjects were few and far between when it was clamer. Oh well- I got my wish and the picture to prove it!!
Canon D30, 100-400, iso200, 1/1500 at 5.6, handheld from stern of boat. Cropped about 1/3 from left and some from the top.

Cindy,

This is a nice image, and you can tell how the seas were churning by the background. I've yet to have a chance to go on a Paleagic. Hopefully some day :)

Nice shot Cindy. I am glad you were able to not only see but photograph a new bird on this trip.

Cindy, Nice capture. On rough seas this is no easy feat especially with a D30.

Way to make the most of the opportunity! Blue water and the bird in a steep bank, almost touching the water, are nice.

I'd say "mission impossible.....mission accomplished". You did a great job with this one. I know how difficult it is to shoot from a boat in rough water. You got your albatross.

Cindy,

the one you saw you got an image. Well done. Great angle on the wings and the sea looks somewhat "unfriendly" :D

You did pretty darn good given the conditions. It looks like there is plenty more detail to be extracted from this image with some selective dodging under the wings and curves work.

I like the tilted bird in flight with the wingtip so close to the water. Great use of space here, too, which helps to show the tumbling seas.

A fine image for your first pelagic. Your experience sounds very typical. Hand holding is the only option for this. My favorite lens when I did this was a 400/5.6 (manual focus in those days), and a film speed of ISO 200 usually worked well.

Now what you need is a winter pelagic in the Atlantic, with lots of salt spray, associated with a major storm!

You saw one, shot one, and posted one. Score Cindy! Sounds like a high success ratio. This is a nice angled turn over beautiful water. Well done! :)

I'd crop a bit more from the top and a bit from right. But I was never the best at picking crops for these types of images. Still you might think about it. I love the detail on the bird and the color of the water in this. 8)
