My first post here at this forum. I am new to photography and have owned my equipment for about 6 months.
Taken at Lake Texoma on the OK/TX Border about 3 weeks ago.
We had a massive fish kill, in a shallow pool just off of Texoma due to Golden Alga last month. The Pelicans, Gulls, Cormorants, and scavengers were having a field day. Unfortunately thousands and thousands of fish died.

Canon D60, 100-400 IS, Overcast conditions shot at ISO 800, ss 1/160
75% of Full Frame, PS CS post processing for levels and USM.

Well done, Shawn.

Welcome to NSN. Good to see you here.

This image of the white pelican is nice. It may be a tad hot around the head, but there's nice detail on the underside.

Great catch of this beauty in flight! I happen to really like the White Pelicans, saw them myself for the first time in Texas last April.

What caused the fish kill? At a shallow pond near where I grew up in New England, there was often a "winter kill" effect and hundreds of carp would die over the winter, leaving a feast for scavengers in the spring. The shallow water with much of the surface frozen leaves very little oxygen for the fish and the larger fish, with more oxygen requirements, die off first.

Anyway, I digress! Glad to see you posting, welcome to NatureScapes.Net!

Nice shot, Shawn. It looks like I need to take a weekend and drive south to Lake Texoma. I didn't know pelicans flew this far inland. I have not seen any up here in Tulsa.

Shawn, welcome to NSN. Awesome first post, especially for only shooting for six months.

Welcome to NSN Shawn! This is a great first post. I'm amazed by the smoothness of the BG at ISO 800 on the D60. It looks like you've certainly made the most out of your first 6 months of bird photography and your PS skills look to already be well developed. I'm looking forward to more! :)

Very well done. Just a bit of an oversharpening halo around the wings. Welcome to NSN.

Hi Shawn---welcome and a nice first post! I would consider enclosing just the bird with the lasso and applying USM to avoid the halo. Alternately, you might try a larger Threshold when there is a plain background like this.
