Wood Duck, San Diego, CA

Last chance for the motif! I guess this guy is in breeding plumage. ;)

I worked hard on the wood ducks earlier this year and this is one of my favorite head shots. I have plenty of the whole bird too...

Comments and brutal critiques welcomed.

Nice shot Greg, what a beauty! Good work not blowing out the white patch on the bill that always seems to go out on me. Haven't tried them yet with digital but looking forward to it where you can control that a bit better.

I have tried and tried to get what I would consider to be a Wood Duck shot with the colours correctly represented. To date I have taken several, but none passed the high standard I have set myself. The Ducks themselves refuse to cooperate! I waited to ambush one a couple of weeks back as it swam towards me in a fairly narrow channel because I thought I would get a good shot. He saw me waiting, climbed out of the water, waddled past on the far bank and re-entered the water when he was well past me!!! - I won't tell you what I said!

What all this is leading up to is, that this shot of yours is as near perfect as they come and Kudos to you for showing me that it IS possible to get the perfect shot of this extremely difficult Duck.

Great shot Greg. Did you get this from a blind? Around Seattle, the wood ducks are very skittish and usually require a blind.

Greg,

I don't think it's possible to get more detail out of a Wood Duck image. This is tremendous.

Very nice shot, where is the rest of the body? (Kidding)

The eye and feather detail are outstanding color. You had incredible light for this shot. I am jealous :) The only thing else I can say, is it is nice to have an example to aspire towards.
