Neil, Love the bed of mussels in this shot. I would have gone with less DOF giving a softer, more OOF blue BG. Nice shot.

What great light you had there!

The bird is sharp an the pose is really interesting.

Those are alot of shells there :)

One question/suggestion. Did you try shooting at a higher shutter speed and larger aperture to throw more of the water out of focus?

At 1/125 I was just below the synch speed. I think that I was too distant for high speed synch and needed the fill because the sun was actually quite high in the sky at the time. I was in Av so the aperture was going to be small no matter what.

I think the DOF is fine on this one. The pile of mussels behind the left leg needs it to be where it is, IMO.

This is a wonderful shot!!

I agree with Bill. Less d.o.f. could have spoiled the foreground, and I like the background as is.

This is excellent. The mussels make a great perch. Well done.

I like it as is. Great detail throughout and getting it on those mussels is a definite bonus. I think when you have a perch with a lot of detail and is as unusual as it is, the extra DOF in the bg is almost unnoticable.

Outstanding shot, Neil. I recently saw a Whimbrel at Fort De Soto, but he never got close enough to shoot. I'm itching to get one of these guys.
