Great Egret
Venice, Florida

In searching through my images from Venice last year, this one stood out to me because of the open bill and the angle of the bird in flight.

White balance can be a challenge, but I found it especially so with my Nikon D1. (Luckily, I photograph a lot of birds with white plumage, which can help me balance the whites.) Despite the different lighting on the bird over various areas, I edited the image to neutralize color casts.

This was taken on a somewhat overcast day, yet the tops of the wings may look hot. This appears to be from contrast with the darker whites, as I was careful during editing that the brighter areas stay at or under around RGB 237.

Sorry I haven't been posting much, I have been redesigning my personal website and it is a much bigger project than I anticipated. Things should be back to normal in a day or so when it goes back online. But I wanted to get this post in for the motif... :D

Digital capture with Nikon D1
Sigma 300 f/2.8 with 1.4x teleconverter
Manually exposed at 1/500, f/.56
ISO 200
Tripod with Wimberley Sidekick

Excellent shot,

I like the green base of the bill complementary to the BG.

The 'hot' wings don't disturb me. The front head is that hot as well? Can't tell from here. Looks good.

Cheers

This is a great shot. I happened to get one like this (almost identical) this year) same place, I wonder if the same bird? Nah! Good job!

Love the posture of this guy. I like the even BG. Nothing looks hot to me. Great shot Heather.

Nice capture. I really like the green background. I don't find the hot whites disturbing at all.
