Rockhopper Penguin
Saunders Island, Falkland Islands

This image has been posted before on other sites but not here so I am posting it by request. It is one of my favorite shots from the Falklands. I was sitting on the rocks waiting for the rockhoppers to come up from the water when this one struck a pose and a chord for me!

Photographing in the Falklands is an incredible experience. It is relatively easy to get close to even the smallest songbirds and the penguins, well if you have a seat and a little patience they may soon be checking you out. I had rockhoppers walk across my outstretched legs and at one point a juvenile hopped from one boot to the other-perhaps practicing his 'rock hopping'.

Canon EOS3 with 100-400IS, Provia 100F on tripod.

Great catch! And what an experience it must have been. Exposure and composition both look to be right on.

Thanks for sharing.

I still absolutely love this. I *really* hate to even mention this but I think I am seeing a few dust spots? The little pointing wing is about as sweet as can be and I love his little toes. :)

Cheryl,

Looking at this, it is no wonder that it won in the Nature's Best Magazine.

Cheryl,
Words to describe this image escape me. It's easy to see why it is so highly acclaimed. Glad the Irish whipped up on those Cougars yesterday (I went to the U of Washington, and WSU is our archrival. :P

I am exceedingly displeased with myself for not having seen this image until this late time. It is a wonderful image and although I may have seen this in another place in time, I particularly enjoy it today at this very moment. Thank-you and have a very nice day.

Thanks for posting this. Like Dennis, I also hadn't seen it previously, and it really is special.

The Falklands are moving up on my "short list."
