I think that is a pretty cool image. Background is excellent as well. I wonder how it would look as a straight vertical...just another thought.

Nice job! :)

Scotto,

Very nice and George's idea is not bad. It gets rid of that flower in the lower left.

Very nice Scotto. I like the cropping suggestion to make a vertical.

Very cool shot! 8) I like it the way it is with the purple adding color to the image, but I think the crop as suggested would be even better.

Hey Scott, Welcome to NSN.

Great first post. The bird is in great plumage. The BG is awesome. The flowers are awesome and the feeding action is great.

If that left flower was not there, I would crop to vertical. Tough decision.

I'd go with the crop. It would help make the bird a bit more dominant in the frame.

I like it. The background the flowers/thistle etc are wonderful. Don't know how you got one of these guys to perch on something so useful :)

Scotto,
I too would go with the vertical crop. What marvelous colors in the bird.

For what its worth, I would leave it as it is. I think it makes a pretty interesting picture. I look at the finch, then around to the flowers then back to the finch.. Its a little different then the clean isolated rules, and thats probably why I like it. Thanks for posting and welcome here..

Very nice first post. Love the rich green BG and the perch. Not sure about the plant coming in from the bottom. I agree that a vertical which would remove that element might be better.

A gorgeous first post. Wonderful detail, exposure, BG and colors. I'd be tempted to try the vertical crop......just a suggestion. Looking forward to many more posts. Great job!

Wonderful, Scotto. Yes, a vertical would be nice, but so is this.

Scott,

I think this is a great shot, especially for a first post. I like everything about it, including the composition as presented, and would not consider switching to vertical; the purple thistle is too important a compositional balancing element here. If it weren't there, probably yes.

Well done!

Cute bird and great perch. I like how there are thistles at two different stages in the image, although I wonder if the vertical crop that has suggested might be nice, too.

This bird is one of the first ones I was able to ID as a child and it seems too bad that I still don't have an image of one yet! Such a beautiful bird, too.

I too would have fun cropping this one to see how many good images I could get from it. As presented this is very nice. But it's always fun to take a good picture and try and make it better.
