Horned Puffins at Cliff Edge, St. Paul Island, Alaska

This was taken a couple of years ago on the Island of St. Paul while co-instructing with Arthur Morris on an IPT. I was just putting a smaller version up in the Workshops Forum and thought I would post one here as well.

Under cloudy conditions I used an incident meter to determine the ambient exposure and stopped down 1/3 to preserve the whites (I would have stopped down 1/3 to 2/3 more from incident had the sun been out). I used fill flash at -1 2/3 to add some pop to the image and catchlights to the birds. Stopping down for adequate DOF I waited until both birds were in the optimal position and made the image. It remains one of my favorites.

EOS 1V, EF 600/4 IS, Provia 100F pushed 1 stop at ISO 200

It would be one of my favorites as well. One well exposed and posed puffin is always nice but two makes this one that much better. I really like the comp. thatnks for the thought process and how you exposed for this.

These guys are terminally cute. Love the shot, pose, and especially the slightly off-balance lean of the one on the right.

Once again, Greg, it doesn't get much better. Looks like slight sharpening halos where black and blue are adjacent, but these do not diminish the image. Simply sensational.

Greg,
Nice shot of two of the best candidates for the title of "Clowns of the Bird World".

Greg,

This is great. I love the moss on the rocks. It really compliments the puffins well.

It is on the wall, and I love it!

I have always liked this shot Greg, but have a new found appreciation for it after trying to get a shot of these birds myself.
