Grey Heron - Ardea cinerea

Hi all, this will be my first post here...nice to see so many familiar names here.

This is one of the first shots I've got with the equipment I bought last week. Got myself a Canon EOS5 with a Canon EF 300/2.8L USM. This was shot near my house in Amsterdam while running a testfilm through my camera.
Grey Herons are pretty shy down here in the Netherlands and I was very happy that this one stayed where it was so I could fire away some shots. Unfortunately I couldn't do anything about those bright patches in the background as I couldn't move to the left or right due to the vegetation. And in some way I think the two patches balance eachother. I'm impressed with the sharpness of this new lens, and I'm sure that I'll have a lot of fun with it in the future.
Curious about your opinion.

Canon EOS5
Canon EF300/2.8 + EF1.4
420mm/4.0 @ 1/?
EV -0.5 to make sure that the patches wouldn't be blown out.
FujiChrome Provia100F
Gitzo Tripod

Cheers,

Jasper Doest

Hi Japper and welcome to NatureScapes! Glad to see you posting here.

Congrats on the new equipment and it looks like you are enjoying it. The image is well composed and exposed. I understand about the background and do find the light areas a bit distracting, although had the background been all dark the bill would have been lost. I also wish the bird had turned it's head a bit toward you. Otherwise a good start for the new "stuff" and I am looking forward to seeing more!

Welcome aboard Jasper and congrats on the new tools. This is a nice shot. Changing the angle to make the backfround a bit more uniform would make it even better in my opinion.

Interesting comp. Works for me. A little more USM and a head turn would improve this also. Welcome to NSN.

Oh, cool, new gear! :) I do not necessarily mind "look away" shots, this one is sort of neat with the abstract background. If it had been dark all over, the bill would have been lost like Greg mentioned.

Welcome to NatureScapes.Net, looking forward to more of your posts!

I have to say that either I need to see more of what the bird is looking at or I would rather have the bird looking at the viewer. Still there is plenty of detail on the bird so even with this pose the picture still looks good.
