Shot this Phalarope today at Bolsa Chica in Orange County CA. There were lots of them about, but it was hard to get one to hold still long enough to take a picture. I finally got one to cooperate somewhat. Canon 10D, 600 + 1.4TC, F8 at 1/1250.

Nice shot Jim and I know what you mean. We had a chance to get some of these guys just coming out of breeding plumage in St Paul Alaska and all they do is spin around like tops... It 'll make ya nuts... Good work Jim..

Very nice shot of this juvenile! I think a slightly lower angle would have improved the shot but I know Bolsa doesn't make it easy. Nice as is; very sharp and well composed.

Side note: Dennis, I think we were shooting Red Phalaropes, I don't believe we saw any Red-necked ones; however they both make you nuts.

Orange County named for the colour of the water?
Agree on the lower angle but still a great shot.

Nicely done. Do like the reflected color in the water and the ripples in front but would consider cropping a bit from the bottom so the reflected neck isn't truncated.

Very nice Jim.
I was at Bolsa Chica on Labor Day and have never seen so many phalaropes there. Hundreds.
My first time out shooting in over a month. My insurance company still hasn't replaced my 10d, so I went out with my film body. Had to do something; I was getting withdrawal symptoms.
Wouldn't you know it, it was overcast all morning and soon after I got there my flash batteries went dead.
What did I do to anger the photography gods???

Very cool shot. I think the angle is not a problem at all.

Sweet one Jim. I'm getting dizzy just thinking about shooting these guys at BC. You really have to put some time in to getting one this good. Richard, hang in there, we've all been there at one point. :)

Jim,
Very nice shot of a guy who can drive a photographer crazy. Your exposure looks perfect.

A beautiful bird, and this is a lovely image of it. I had no idea how hyper these birds really are until I tried to get one in the viewfinder myself.
