Took this on 8-18-03 at La Jolla just before sunset. The coastal clouds had come in partially obscuring the sun so I tried some experiments with flash on an a Willet that was running past me along the water's edge. I liked the colors of the sunset being partially reflected on the wet sand but I knew the bird would be quite dark so I turned the flash on to try and light up the bird. I took only a few shots and this was the best. Cropped about 20% off top and left/right sides. This is a very close match to the slide.

Nice one, Mike!
You caught the running action beautifully here. Perhaps a little more contrast than is might pop the image ...

Nice action shot with just enough foot blur. Sharp for handhold!

Mike,

Very nice shot. You caught a great pose. I like the color of the water. The added contrast in the repost improved the image.

Mike,

I always like the reflected color of the sunset on the wet sand. I think it shows off the Willet much better then the morning backgrounds we have to work with. Good job catching the action. Oh, and I think I like the repost a little better then the original.

Mike,

The repost is the one. It looks like he is prancing. Good job.

Mike, Its the attitude the bird is giving off that makes this shot for me.

Great capture

My only nit would have been the lack of contrast but you took care of that.

Wow, I really like this! The bird is sharp but the motion blur on the legs is really neat. And the color of the water is extremely nice.

I think you could have bumped the saturation and the contrast in the original. The slight contrast boost you gave the second one is an improvement but I don't think you went far enough.
The reason to do all this work on this one is that it's a great action image and deserves this level of attention. That's one nice image. :)
