Returnding from a hike on the Pardise Glacier trail I came upon this hen and her two chicks. While she waited for her chicks to cross the trail and join her, I managed to get a few shots of the mommy.

I like that this shows how this bird blends into its dappled environment. I really like the red at the bottom and it's cool how none of it obstructs the view of the bird. It's a really good shot as is, and I feel if the head was turned a bit more towards us, there would be even more of a connection for the viewer and it would make a good shot even better!

Paul, great shot. I like how the flowers frame the bird but I'm unsure of the square crop. It also looks a little washed out to me, maybe a stop darker would make it pop. Love the colors.

The crop doesn't bother me. A boost in contrast and a turn of the head could make this one better.

In all the times I've been to Rainier, I've never seen one of these there. Its a nice shot. There are a couple of things that would make this existing shot better, warm it up some as the overcast conditions made it a little gray/blue and bump up the contrast a bit.

Nice catch of these elusive birds. I am not overly fond of the square crop with the bird as centered as it is and would prefer to see some additional room in front of the bird on the right. I don't mind the birds position as the eye has light in it and the entire face is seen. Besides, getting birds t move their heads the direction we would prefer is notoriously difficult  . Up to a stop or so less exposure would improve the image as Mr. Murphy said, although this looks to be within a range where a little PS work would really make it pop.

Love the shot; never have seen one of these birds; excellent suggestions thus far. Square crop doesn't bother me, but a bit more room at the top would be nice.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will experiment with adjusting the contrast, color hues and a few other changes to see if I can add a bit more pop to the image.

Great suggestions have already been made to improve this. However, it is a very nice shot as is. A very interesting bird with nice habitat. This is one that I would love to see...thanks for posting it.

I have to agree with Alan, I think there is too little contrast between the darks and the lights. I'm sure some more work in photoshop could really make this image pop.

Great capture, Paul...I agree with Heather's comment but nature doesn't always cooperate--part of the adventure and challange
