Magee Marsh, Ohio 2003

D30, Sigma 400 f5/6 Apo Macro HSM@ f5/6, 1/160th, ISO 200, Exp Comp -1/3, FEC -1.

It was during Spring Migration at Magee Marsh, a little over a year and a half ago, that I became addicted to bird photography. I didn't have an opportunity to spend much time at the Marsh for this year's migration but I did manage to get a few warbler shots that I was happy with. While I don't have a ton of images to share yet, I do feel that I have improved by leaps and bounds due, in large part, to the posts and critiques of many people I now see posting to NSN. Thank you all very much! All comments and suggestions for improvement are greatly appreciated.

I like this a lot. It would have been nice if the bird had turned it's head a little more toward you but they don't seem to care about what we would like them to do. Nice composition. I'd be very happy with this image.

Laura, While I'm not qualified to critique, I can tell you that I love this shot!! The sharp details on this fellow are superb!! Plus I like the comp. The leaf over part of the body does not bother me; it adds interest to the overall setting. Wonderful capture!!

Hi Laura! I too like this a great deal and think it is very well done.

Of course there may be some nits that can be pointed out that I am sure you are already aware of; the head turn (which actually in this case seems to do a good job adding a bit of character to the shot), the hidden tail (not a big deal) and the leaf merging with the back of the head. Ahh but warblers are so hard and there are no "perfect" shots (wouldn't that be boring anyway?)

Bottom line is this one's a beauty; Thanks so much for sharing!

Looks good to me. Head turn and tilt up really gives him some character. My only wish would be for the OOF stick in the lower left to disappear.

Nice shot, Laura. I particularly like it because it shows exactly the type of habitat in which these guys are found during migration.

Hi, Laura! Cute little bird, and I think the natural leaf framing is a strong element here working for the image. While foliage obscuring part of a subject can often work against it, because the bird appears to be sort of emerging from it and the leaves are behind the bird as well, I think it works pretty well here. The image would be stronger if the bird's head was turned more towards us (or if we could see what it was looking at).

My understanding is that the warblers are hard to get, so good catch!

I think this is one time that the head turn works to the photos advantage. very nice. Alan with a D30 this is 640mm angle of view.

The overall effect of this is very pretty. The warm, rich colors are dabbed on and the twisting posture of the bird gives us another view---that works for me. I love it.

I too like the natural framing. I always like shots where the bird is in its environment. Beautiful warbler shot. My only nit is the head turn, but its a minor one that in my opinion doesn't detract from the image.

Laura,

I really like this one a lot. I like how he is hidden a bit behind the leaves as we usually see them and I do like the different position of the head. Well done.

Nice color bomb here. :) The merger of the leaves with the bird does bother me a bit but this kind of shot is not easy to get.

Great environmental shot. Captures it's habitat nicely. I even like the leaf in the foreground.

A slightly better head position or the bird singing would really improve this image. Another nit might be the leaf that intersects the the head, I'd rather it didn't and there was separation there. The leave partially covering don't bother me at all.
