Lookout
Image
10D, 1-4IS, handheld
1/640
f6.3
Exp 0
ISO 400

Slight sharpening/levels in PS, vert crop from horizontal (about 25% off the sides). NOTE: I ran another pass of USM across it as per Heather and Anthony's suggestion.

Taken several months ago, this is still one of my favorite RWB images.

Hi, Matt, and welcome to NatureScapes.Net! :)

Great first image! I like the title "lookout", quite appropriate.

The perch is awesome, fluffy cattail. Like the position of the bird and the tail fanning with the underside towards us. 10D images need a bit more sharpening than those from other DSLRs due to the 10D's anti aliasing, you could likely add a touch more USM here will no ill effects if you wanted to.

Lovely clean blue background as well, great first post!

I agree with Heather on the need for some additional sharpening. The pose and composition are excellent though. :)
Very nice first post! 8)

A lovely shot, Matt. I'd clone out the small patch of cattail on the lower left edge. To my pathetic eyes it appears sharp, but I trust Heather more on this matter. A wonderful debut on this site.

Thanks all - Sandy: it was a touch soft - I sharpened it a little a few minutes ago. Didn't feel a repost was necessary, just a slight tweak to the original.

Matt,

Nice looking lady RWB! I like the everything about this one. The pose, color, and background. I might have been tempted to have the bird a little higher in the frame showing a bit more of the cattail. Excellent image!

A beautiful shot although it looks like the focus point was on the belly rather than the head. A little selective sharpening of the head would improve a very good photograph to be an excellent one.

Thanks again for the comments.

Sandy and E.J.: This is what is so great - you catch every subtle nuance of a photo - I will certainly touch up those areas before making a print :)

cheers,
-matt
