Puffin (Fratercula arctica)

Nikon F100 w Sigma 500mm f/4.5 & Kenko 1.4x tc
Fill flash @-1.7
Sensia 100 @200
PS 7.0 levels, curves, slight crop, USM

One of my puffinshots from the Norvegian island of Runde. Not the most beautiful and the whites are slightly hot on the scan, but I like the blurred tongue on this one. Any suggestions for improvement?

Tobias, I like it very much. I agree with you about the hot whites. I'd also crop a bit from the top.

I like this shot as well. To me, the whites being on the edge don't detract: If we were outside in the sun looking at this bird with our eyeballs, the whites would look about as they do in this photo.

I agree with Sandy. This would work better as a 5:4 for me. I love the tongue action here. Great catch.

I am quickly becoming a big fan of Puffins!

I like the bird facing mostly towards the camera, the rock ledges, and of course the open mouth! A bit off the top would work for me as well.

Good to see you here! :)

Tobias,
Very nice shot with good action. If the background was not so dark then I would not crop it, but its a lot of dark space competing with the subject. The dark areas of the bird somewhat blend into the background a bit. A difficult exposure to conquer and you did a great job.

If I was going to put it on a magazine cover, I'd leave it alone, but otherwise the top is a bit overpowering. I love that tongue.

Thanks for the critique and the tips. I will definetely try a 5:4 crop. i have a tendency to only use 3:2 crops and have to start being a bit creative.

Great shot. I too agree with the suggestion to crop some of the top off.

Well, I like the whole thing except I would consider blurring the grain in the BG. On both my Mac and PC monitors, the exposure is perfect and I like all that space. :)

Good suggestions have been made. However, I'm a sucker for puffin shots and I very much like the action.....and that you were able to get so close. Very nice.....definitely try the crop suggestion.

Welcome to our site!

I too am a sucker for the clown-faced birds! This is sweet, though I agree on the suggestions for cropping and perhaps it has a slight magenta cast as well. Easily fixed.
