Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus)
Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Delray Beach, FL, on 1 May 2002

A tightly-woven nest was tucked neatly into a tree about ten feet above the Wako boardwalk. At the camera’s position about 6 feet above the ground, the inside of the nest could not be seen. On this day the RWBB youngster had hopped up from the nest to an adjacent branch that was fairly well-hidden. I waited a while for mom or dad to feed him, but it didn't happen. I gave up after he tumbled back into the nest. This is the best of the three shots I took.

Despite the foreground foliage obscuring a good portion of the chick, this continues to be one of my favorite images. Some may have seen it; most have not. The intense coloration of the bird is accurate; the image is not oversaturated.

Thanks for looking. Comments, critiques and reposts are welcome.

Very nicely done. Love the little tufts of feathers and fill flash is very effective - since I know it only because you state it. I'm guessing this one's a bit older (since it's with the D30) but with the open beak and the look right at you, I can see why it's one of your favorites. My only preference would be for a bit more DOF for the chest feathers.

Very nicely done despite the difficult shooting environment you were in, Sandy!

LOL. As you so often do Sandy, you manage to combine excellence with humour - but never at the expense of the subject (if you get my meaning - which I am sure you do).

Sandy,

A well done image and the colors really come alive. Thanks for mentioning that they are the true colors.

Super cool shot! It looks a bit heavily saturated on this end but the look of the bird and the open bill is awesome.

Sandy,

The blue, green, orange color combination along with the sharpness of the chick's head really makes this a striking image. Could you have identified this bird without having first seen the parents? :D

I have never seen it but love it! The eye is very captivating, and the colors are great as are the little puffs. The surrounding foliage makes the chick appear to be in its protected environment and in my opinion adds to the shot.

Sandy,

This is very nice. The surrounding blues and greens add alot to the image. Nice work with the fill flash to get some color in the mouth.

So full of life. The foliage makes it a little busy but it doesn't hurt this image. Nice to see this again.

I remember this from before. I loved it then and I love it even more now. The foreground foliage frames and cradles this delicate creature very nicely.

Very, very nice. :)
