Red Crowned Crane Juvenile
Captive

EOS30, Sigma 100-300 F4, Provia 100F, Handheld,

For those of you who didn't like the legs chopped, here is another view, although the long grass still hides the feet. :)

I love the sweet expression in the face of this youngster.

All comments and critiques always welcome and appreciated and thanks for looking.

Whole series has been nice, and you're right that the facial expression really "makes" this shot - but it's the legs that really crack me up. This guy's got some growing to do to grow into those legs. On the last shot, I thought there was a bit too much flash; here I think just a touch of flash, perhaps at -1&2/3, might make the bird pop more. Only other thought: E.J. made the suggestion to get lower previously, which was a good idea there and which you've done here effectively. Unfortunately, in this case it also brings in some sunny background, which again suggests using flash to offset. (Aren't there always unpleasant trade-offs? :) )

Hiding the feet isn't a problem at all as long as the extension of where the feet would be is in the photo. I like the photos of this little guy a lot. I like the idea of using a faster shutter speed in this one and then use flash to brighten it back up. This would reduce the shadow effect while keeping the bird properly exposed.

Can't add much to the technicals already stated by others. However, this crane is a very appealing subject. Well worth your time and effort.

Gee...you meet all kinds of people at these sites :D . The flash has been covered. On a personal level I'd like just a bit more room on top. Still very nice work Carol.

It feels a touch cramped at top for me too, but I wouldn't want to add too much more of that bright BG, which would then take away from the bird.

Legs have been covered - they're great!

I like this one better than the last one since even though you can't see the feet, there is room for them in the frame.

There is a lot of merit to this image - the bird is really well captured and I like the composition. Techncially it would be nice if the upper background hadn't been sunny and the rest of the image in the shade but it's still a good image to have, especially for your series.

I like the expression on its face, too. :)
