I Came Upon A Tank (Pond) Of Egrets (Great & Little), Wood Storks, And Spoonbills About 4:30 In The Afternoon. Sun Was At My Back, But The Glare Was Still Pretty High. (Typical Texas).. I Should Have Gone Back To The House For A Longer Lens (400mm f2.8 Or 600mm f4), Only Had The 200mm f1.8 & 300mm f4 IS & 1.4TC. But I Was Afraid To Lose The Opportunity. I Should Have Spot Metered Off The Egret Also, But Hind Sight Is 20-20... I Burned The Inside Wing Area A Touch To Try And Regain Some Loss Detail... But Did Not Want to Over Do It... I Am Going To Try The Raw Correction Written About Here... (Thanks)
Please Tell Me What You Think, Perched Guys Or Big Mammals Are Sure Easier To Shoot...

1D & 300mm f4 IS + 1.4TC @ f16 - 1/1000 - Iso800 - -2/3ev - Ev - Av
Minor Crop On Left Side Only, To Remove Partial Bird....

Wow, the sun sure looks high for 4:30 PM! Great moment wiht th ebird, but the image loses impact for all the reasons you mention. Next time, go back and get that long lens... :)

Thanks Lillian, I Like The Photo For It's Good Elements, Shadow, Reflection, Bird Position, But The Problems Do Bother Me! Oh Well, For Me The Best Way To Learn Is By Rote... And This Taught Me Alot! Even if It Is To Always Carry My Long Lens... lol..

Nothing wrong with the lens and camera combination. Now just get closer. :)

Well, your self critique is shows you have a pretty good awareness of what it's all about. :) I like the jumping motion and the feet suspended over the water - even if there are some technical imperfections I'm glad you shared this.

Definitely go back when the sun is lower and you have a longer lens, then be sure to post what you get! :)
