I see it - nice sharpness across the body with a little softness on the wingtips. I like the pose - half a second earlier the bird's shoulders would be facing the film plane - which usually gets a more personal response from the viewer, but this works because of the detail.

I think the detail and the relatively clean (but dark) BG really bring the bird forward.

I like it, Dick. Excellent detail and BG. It took courage to shoot 1/500 @ f8 instead of 1/1000 @ f5.6, but it paid off in extra DOF.

I was in aperture priority, Sandy, so there wasn't much courage, I guess.

What I like about this shot is how "straight" the heron is flying!
